Abstract

In this article we find his the much-cited definition of grammaticalisation as the „increase of the range of a morpheme advancing from lexical to a grammatical or from a less grammatical to a even more grammatical status, e.g. from a derivative formant to an inflecitonal formant. (Kury?owicz 1965 [1975: 52]). Kury?owicz also gives an extensive survey of various grammatical categories and their development through grammaticalisation. His view of grammaticalisation clearly emphasises the passage from analytic to synthetic categories or constructions.
