Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Klavans, Judith (1985)

Abstract

In this article which is based on Klavan’s dissertation (1982) three different parameters are proposed in order to explain the distribution of clitics: initial/final with respect to their domain, before/after the peripheral constituent of their domain, and left/right regarding attachments to its hosts. When all combinations of these three parameters are considered, the result is that the clitics can appear anywhere in a sentence except for initially or finally, i.e. eight different positions are possible according to which eight different clitic types are assigned.
