Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Abstract

Within OT, the proposal is that lack of identity between the reduplicative morpheme and the Base are motivated by a constraint ranking optimizing less marked structure in the reduplicative morpheme. Bugotu and Cheke Holo appear to be exceptions to this generalization, as the reduplicative morphemes require vowel hiatus, making them more marked than the Base. The OT analysis developed in the article shows that vowel hiatus follows from a size-penalizing markedness constraint.
