Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Iscrulescu, Cristian (2006)

Iscrulescu argues that there is a systematic correlation between morphosyntactic iconicity and phonological iconicty. A typical example he cites is intervocalic voicing (phonological unmarkedness) in Mayak which occurs in active verbs (morphosyntactic unmarkedness), but is avoided (resulting in phonological markedness) in passive (molrphosyntactically marked) verbs. This is derived by the optimality-theoretic constraint schema "LICENSE(M,g)5, where M is a marked phonological structure and g, a marked member of grammatical category G" (p. 16).
