Abstract

This paper argues (i) that paradigmatic gaps in Icelandic imperatives are restricted to verbs with a segmental shape (ending in /ll/ or /nn/) which is also irregular in showing exceptional morphophonological behavior in the imperative with non-defective verbs and (ii) that gaps in imperatives depend on the presence of a corresponding stem allomorph in past tense forms. In conclusion the paper provides evidence that gaps can be triggered by morphological unpredictability (irregularity) and is governed by paradigmatic relations (see also Albright 2005, 2010, Sims 2006).
