Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Fodor, Janet D. (1972)

Abstract

The paper discusses the meaning of the paradigmatic gaps for the English verb BEWARE (“The real generalization about beware is that it can occur wherever uninflected be followed by an adjective can occur, e.g. in imperatives, infinitival complements, following modals.” p. 531) for the treatment of exceptionality in transformational syntax. Fodor concludes that the distribution of BEWARE is best captured if accidental gaps in derivational morphology are not attributed to exception features on lexemes for otherwise general syntactic rules, but by restrictions/gaps on/at (at least partially) postsyntactic lexical insertion.
