Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Abstract

(= Surrey 36) Latvian is traditionally considered to have an instrumental case, used only with the preposition ar. However the instrumental never has a distinct form: in the singular it is identical to the accusative, in the plural to the dative (the case which all prepositions govern in the plural). It is concluded that there is no real basis for postulating an instrumental case at the level of morphosyntax.
