Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Downing, Laura (2003)

Abstract

This article argues that mismatches in tone patterns between the reduplicative morpheme and the Base in many Bantu languages cannot be accounted for by an emergence of the unmarked (TETU) analysis alone. Instead, some cases of tonal mismatch are accounted for by proposing that (a) the reduplicative construction is a Stem compound, and (b) the Stem tone pattern contributed by the Base takes the entire compound (not just the Base) as its domain.
