Abstract

(= Surrey 25) Asserts (following Jakobson 1958) that any synchronic account of a declensional system such as that found in Old Russian must account not just for the forms but for syncretism as well. Syncretism is treated as underspecification within rule blocks. Note that a precondition on syncretism in Coats’ definition is that the forms must share some feature; thus e.g. identity of genitive singular and nominative plural is treated as accidental.
