Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Carstairs, Andrew (1983)

Abstract

Introduces and defends Carstairs' Paradigm Economy Principle which requires that the number of inflectional classes in a language should not exceed the maximal number of allomorphs for a specific category in the language. Marks the beginning of an ongoing discussion on whether there are substantial restrictions on the possible number of inflectional classes in natural languages (see Müller 2007b for more references).
