Abstract

Argues that case syncretism crosslinguistically/universally follows the hierarchy Ins > Dat > Gen > Acc > Nom in that two cases can only have the same form if all cases separating them in the hierarchy share this form. This is derived by the assumption that case features are syntactic head in a universally fixed constituent structure and an elaborate nanosyntactic model of phrase structure and morphological spellout.
