Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Boyé, Gilles and Cabredo Hofherr, Patricia (2010)

Abstract

The authors argue that defective verbs in Spanish and French follow the same patterns as stem suppletion in these languages, i.e. if specific sets of inflected forms systematically share a stem in non-defective verbs, the same sets of forms are the domain of defectivity. Technically this observation is implemented by the assumption that defective verbs show a suppletive zero allomorph for specific stems.
