Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Abstract

Syncretism in the personal pronoun of German follows from the competition between case and gender marking, interacting with animacy: If case and gender correlate with the same animacy state (dative and maskuline: high animacy, direct object and neuter: low animacy), one of them can easily remain unexpressed for the sake of economy (syncretism). If both refer to different states of animacy (direct object and neuter: inanimate vs. animate) it is more important to maintain an overt expression for both (no syncretism).
