Abstract

Argues that transitive subject-object agreement in the Uralic language Mordvin uses exclusively portmanteaus and provides an optimality-theoretic analysis (based on a newly introduced formalism similar to Aissen’s approach to Differential Object Marking) for the highly systematic nature of syncretism in this system. Aranovich also gives an interesting argument that DM-style impoverishment cannot derive all types of syncretism since an impoverishment account for one syncretism would necessarily delete the necessary context which would allow to derive a second case of syncretism by impoverishment.
