Network Core Mechanisms of Exponence

Allen, Margaret Reece (1978)

Abstract

Dissertation crucial for the development of Lexical Morphology and Phonology. Allen argues that English has zero affixes to account for the phonological behavior (especially stress shift) in conversion (e.g. contrást vs. cóntrast), and provides an interesting argument that these zero affixes are suffixes - because they change the part-of-speech of their base, which is a behavior characteristic for suffixes.
