Abstract

The article develops the standard Optimality Theory (OT) account of the generalization that a frequent source of mismatch between a reduplicative morpheme (RED) and its Base is that RED may be constrained to contain less marked structure than the Base. This is the Emergence of the Unmarked (TETU) effect that they show falls out from constraint ranking.
